If you are updating from a previous version of PrintToPDF, a bit of care is needed to work around bugs in Apple’s desktop printing software.
1. First, go to the Chooser and select any printer driver other than PrintToPDF.
2. Move any PrintToPDF desktop printers to the Trash, and empty the Trash.
3. Move the old copy of PrintToPDF to the Trash.
4. Open the Chooser, which should now not show PrintToPDF, and then close it. (This step may seem pointless, but it forces Chooser to forget anything it might have remembered about the old version.)
5. Move the new version of PrintToPDF to the Extensions folder.
6. Open the Chooser and choose PrintToPDF.
If you’re wondering what happens if you don’t follow this procedure, I have seen two kinds of symptoms:
1. Multiple printer icons appearing on the desktop.
2. Finder showing error messages complaining about an error of type -110.
If you still have problems in spite of all precautions, see Apple’s troubleshooting note on desktop printing, <http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n24306>.
